Podocarpus macrophyllus is a conifer in the genus Podocarpus, family Podocarpaceae. It is the northernmost species of the genus, native to southern Japan and southern and eastern China. Common names in English include yew plum pine, Buddhist pine, fern pine and Japanese yew. The fruits of Podocarpus macrophyllus, also known as yew plum pine or Buddhist pine, are fleshy, berry-like cones that turn reddish purple when mature. The fruits are edible, with the fleshy portion being sweet and resembling chewy gum drops, while the inner seed is inedible. Plants of the Podocarpus species have been used as traditional medicinal herbs in many communities, including China and the Maasai tribe. Podocarpus plant extracts are used to treat asthma, fever, venereal diseases, eye diseases, cholera, cuts, traumatic fractures, coughs, body odor, and other diseases.
