The White Seagrape (Coccoloba spinescens) is a striking relative of the common Sea Grape, best known for its long, cascading clusters of small, fleshy fruits that ripen to a brilliant, bright white. Native to the arid deserts and grasslands of Paraguay, this shrub remains very compact and grows low to the ground, making it an excellent choice for smaller landscapes or rock gardens. Interestingly, despite the "spinescens" in its name, the plant is actually entirely spine-free. It is an exceptionally tough and drought-resistant specimen, showing surprising resilience with a cold hardiness that may extend down into the low 20s°F. Beyond its rugged nature, the fruits are a delightful harvest, offering a unique sweet-tart candy flavor that makes them incredibly pleasant to eat.
