Plant type

Passiflora adenopoda is a highly desirable and vigorous vine known for both its ornamental beauty and its edible fruit. This unique species is immediately recognizable by its large, lobed leaves which give it the common name Velcro Passionfruit because of their tendency to stick to clothing. The plant blooms profusely, producing fairly large flowers marked by a beautiful contrast of white and purple. Native to the Americas, this vine is found in forests stretching from southern Mexico and following the Andes down to Peru, thriving at low to medium elevations. Due to its striking appearance and abundant flowering, it is a favored ornamental choice for tropical and frost-free warm temperate climates.

Following the impressive floral display, the vine develops attractive purplish, egg-shaped fruits that are completely edible. The fruit is considered very nice and is noted for having a flavor profile that is pleasantly more sweet than acidic. A significant advantage for home growers is that P. adenopoda is one of the few passionfruit species that is self-fertile, meaning it produces fruit by itself without requiring a second plant for cross-pollination. This characteristic, combined with its vigor and the unique appeal of its foliage and fruit, makes it an excellent addition to any appropriate garden setting.
