Vaccinium meridionale is a shrub or small tree rarely more than 4 m tall with small, simple leaves and bell-shaped, white flowers followed by small, edible fruits that are black when ripe. It is widely distributed in montane rainforests in the Andes in Peru north to the Caribbean between 900 and 2200 m. The fruits are locally popular and consumed fresh or made into jams and used in baked goods. The Andean berry, Vaccinium meridionale, has a slightly astringent and acidic taste. It is often described as having a sweet and sour flavor. Some people also find it to have an herbal or even a slightly woody flavor, different from blueberries.
