General Information:

Elegant and fast-growing deciduous tree.

Member of the Anacardiaceae family.

Climacteric in nature and comes in two sizes: large and miniature/dwarf.

Cultivated in the tropics for its edible fruit and ornamental value.

Sweet, pleasant-tasting acidic fruit about the size of an apple.

Pineapple-mango-like flavor and crunchy texture.

Often eaten with salt, chili powder, sugar, or shrimp paste.

Ripened fruit tastes the best.

Planting and Care

It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 900 - 1,800mm, trees need to be grown in a sunny position, plants are not too fussy over soil, not needing very fertile conditions.

Uses/Benefits

Ripe fruits eaten raw or cooked, made into juice. Unripe fruits are made into jellies, pickles or used to flavour soups and stews. Acidic young leaves are eaten raw, steamed or cooked with meat.
