Introduction and Discovery

Often referred to by collectors as Chrysophyllum Ipiranga or simply "Piranga", this plant is an extraordinary and ultra-rare tropical fruit tree belonging to the Sapotaceae family. Discovered as a native population in Bahia, Brazil, this little-known species has quickly become highly coveted by rare fruit collectors worldwide for its unique visual and culinary characteristics.

Appearance and Flavor Profile

The tree produces large, rounded fruits that turn a distinct reddish-brown upon reaching maturity. When opened, it reveals a spectacular, deep crimson-red pulp surrounding its glossy seeds—a striking departure from common star apples (Chrysophyllum caimito), which typically feature translucent purple or white flesh. True to its appeal, the fruit is reported to be intensely sweet. Notably, both the inner pulp and the skin are sweet and fully edible, breaking away from standard star apples where the skin is usually discarded due to bitter, milky latex.

Cultivation

Beyond its exceptional fruit, early reports from Brazilian growers indicate that Chrysophyllum Ipiranga is a promising specimen for cultivation. The tree exhibits vigorous growth and enters fruit production relatively quickly compared to other rare members of the Sapotaceae family, making it an exciting prospect for enthusiasts and horticulturists alike.
