Plant Type

The breadnut tree (Brosimum alicastrum) yields a highly versatile fruit featuring a sweet, edible orange skin with a citrusy aroma that encases a nutrient-dense seed known as the Maya nut. This gluten-free seed is the plant's primary resource, packed with protein, fiber, folic acid, and essential minerals like calcium, iron, zinc, and potassium. Its culinary profile transforms depending on preparation: raw seeds offer a nutty, hazelnut-like flavor, boiled and pureed seeds taste remarkably like mashed potatoes, and roasted seeds develop a rich coffee and chocolate aroma used to brew a caffeine-free beverage. The seeds are also frequently dried and ground into flour for tortillas, bread, and porridge, while the tree's bark and milky sap serve traditional medicinal roles, such as treating respiratory illnesses and promoting milk production in nursing mothers.

Cultivating the breadnut tree is straightforward due to its resilient and undemanding nature. It thrives in full sun or light shade and adapts to a wide variety of well-drained soils, including shallow, calcareous, and saline environments, provided it is completely protected from waterlogging. While this tropical plant grows best in average annual temperatures between 15°C and 25°C and easily handles varied rainfall levels, an established tree becomes remarkably hardy, capable of surviving both drought conditions and short, light frosts.
