General Information:

Native to tropical America. Round or oval, golden yellow or dark orange. Skin: Fine, smooth. Flesh: Soft, juicy, opaque. Seeds: Brown or black. Thorns: Present on branches and fruits. Leaves: Edible, meaty.

Leaves: Edible, contain 20-30% protein (dry matter). Nutrients in Leaves: Iron, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium (higher levels than spinach and lettuce).

Planting and Care

Only suited for low elevations with a temperature range from 20–37°C, chilling temperature causes leaf shedding. Hot, humid conditions with a medium to high rainfall are preferred; too much rain prevents normal fruit development and premature abscission. Prefers deep soils that have good drainage. The plant is drought tolerant and does not do well if over watered.

Lemon vine is used for digestive disorders such as gas or diarrhea, muscle damage caused by exercise, multiple sclerosis (MS), insomnia, and other conditions.

Uses/Benefits

The fruits are eaten fresh, stewed, preserved with sugar or made into jam or jelly. It is used as an ingredient in herbal teas, as a fragrance in perfumes, and as an ingredient in alcoholic beverages.
