Lepisanthes amoena is a shrub growing up to 6 metres tall, or a tree growing up to 10 metres tall.The tree is harvested from the wild as a local source of food, medicine and wood. The plant is sometimes grown as an ornamental. The brownish or purple fruit is up to 25mm x 30mm in size and the yellowish to white pulp has a sweet flavour .
The bark, as well as the young leaves, contain saponin and are applied against ulcers, also an extract of the bark is used against hoarseness
