Kasam Fruit (Erioglossum Rubiginosum):

Scientific Name: Erioglossum Rubiginosum

Common Name: Rusty Sapindus, Kalayo

General Information:

Tiny tree or shrub with a bushy crown. Pinnate leaves with hairs on every part. White, fragrant flowers. Delectable, sweet-tasting, slightly astringent fruit pulp. Fruits change colors to yellow, orange, purple, and nearly black when fully ripe.

Medicinal Uses:

Protects the liver. Decoction of Kasam helps in eradicating IBS and other liver-related problems. Contains chlorogenic acid with proven antihepatotoxic properties, promoting a healthy liver.

Maintenance Required: Moderate


Planting and Care

Use a well-draining media, such as a mixture of soil, compost, and sand in equal parts. The tree requires a lot of water in its first growing phase.

Special Feature

Fruit is edible containing high antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, CNS depressant, low cytotoxicity properties but for some not a pleasant edibility. This plant is also used for treatment of leprosy.

Fruit is eaten raw and can be used in salads, beverages or cooked as well.
