The Japanese Mongee banana is a unique variety with an edible skin, developed by D&T Farm in Japan using a "Freeze-Thaw Awakening" method that allows the tropical plant to grow in cooler climates and in a reduced timeframe. The name "Mongee" means "incredible" or "super" in the local dialect of Okayama Prefecture. Consumers are advised to wait for brown spots to appear on the skin before consumption, as the peel is thinner and less bitter than that of regular bananas. The Japanese Mongee banana has a sweet, strong tropical flavor, often compared to pineapple, with a higher sugar content than regular bananas. Its edible peel is thin and has a relatively mild flavor, described by some as tasting somewhat like lettuce.
