Inga vera, commonly known as Ice Cream Bean, is a tropical tree native to Central and South America. It belongs to the Fabaceae family and is known for its sweet, edible pods. The tree can grow up to 30 meters in height and is often found in riverbanks and floodplains. It is a hardwood species and is valued for its nitrogen-fixing ability, which improves soil fertility. The sweet tasting pulp found surrounding the seeds inside the pod is eaten. The taste is described as resembling that of vanilla ice cream. Some varieties even possess a slight cinnamon flavor. The seeds are only edible when cooked and have a taste similar to that of chickpeas
