Goumi Berry Live Plant (Elaeagnus multiflora)

Elaeagnus multiflora, commonly known as the goumi berry or cherry silverberry, is a hardy, fast-growing deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub native to East Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. Typically reaching heights of 6 to 10 feet with a rounded, bushy form, it features striking dark green leaves with distinctive silvery undersides that shimmer beautifully in the wind. In mid-spring, the shrub produces a profusion of small, creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers that emit a sweet, lilac-like fragrance, drawing in a wide variety of pollinators. Beyond its ornamental appeal, the goumi is highly valued in permaculture for its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, which naturally improves the health of the surrounding soil.
By mid-to-late summer, these fragrant blossoms give way to small, oblong, cherry-like drupes hanging from long, slender stems. The fruits ripen into a brilliant, jewel-toned red, entirely speckled with tiny, light-reflecting silver scales. Protected by a delicate, fragile skin, the juicy flesh surrounds a single, elongated, and highly fibrous seed that is completely edible. Because the fruit skins tear so easily, they are rarely found in commercial supermarkets, making them a unique and treasured treat reserved primarily for home gardeners and foraging wildlife.
The flavor profile of the goumi berry depends heavily on its stage of ripeness, rewarding the patient harvester. If sampled even slightly underripe, the fruit contains high levels of tannins, causing an intensely sour and astringent sensation that dries out the mouth. However, when allowed to ripen fully on the branch until they are soft to the touch, they transform into a delicious, juicy balance of sweet and tart. Many describe the flavor as a bright, refreshing blend reminiscent of wild cherries, pomegranates, and tangy rhubarb, making them excellent for eating fresh off the bush or cooking down into vibrant jams, jellies, and pies.
