Ceylon Ebony or Ebony tree is a species of tree in the genus Diospyros and the family Ebenaceae. The tree produces valuable black wood. One of the most distinctive characteristics of ebony wood is its dark color. The heartwood of an ebony tree is nearly black, with little to no visible grain. This dark coloration is caused by the presence of high levels of melanin in the wood and gives the wood its name.
Ebony wood is extremely dense and hard, making it highly durable. It is relatively heavy and has a fine, smooth texture. This combination of characteristics makes it ideal for carving and turning. Turning is the art of shaping wood by carving it on a spinning lathe. Ebony heartwood is one of the most intensely black woods known and has been used from time immemorial for ornamental carving and turnery and for specific purposes in decoration. Common Names: Karimaram, Indian Ebony, Ceylon Ebony, Karingali, Karu, East-Indian ebony, Mauritius ebony, and Ebony persimmon
