Plant Type

The Duncan mango is a distinguished Florida hybrid, originating from a cross between the Edward and a Philippine mango. It was selected as an Edward seedling by David Sturrock in West Palm Beach and named in honor of Ralph Duncan. A notable part of its history is the speed of its development; by approach-grafting the seedling onto a mature stump, Sturrock was able to bring the tree to fruit in just two years. Today, it is recognized as a highly productive and disease-resistant variety, yielding medium-sized, clean yellow fruit that are as reliable as they are delicious.

When you slice into a Duncan, you are greeted by a beautiful orangish-yellow flesh that is entirely fiberless. The texture is exceptionally smooth, creamy, and melting—frequently compared to the silkiness of the Nam Doc Mai. This decadent mouthfeel is paired with a mild aroma that carries pleasant hints of apricot. From a flavor standpoint, it offers a "refreshing" experience that sits somewhere between the Indochinese and classic mango profiles. It is mildly sweet with a slight complexity, featuring subtle notes of tartness and tangerine-like citrus.

The taste of a Duncan is often described as a milder, more approachable version of its parent, the Edward. However, it retains a unique character, including a prominent bitterness when eating close to the skin, which is very reminiscent of the Philippine Carabao mango. This blend of classic richness and bright, citrusy undertones makes it a favorite for those who enjoy a balanced, sophisticated fruit.
