Cornus mas, commonly known as cornelian cherry, is a deciduous shrub or small tree that is native to central and southern Europe into western Asia. It is a fairly slow-growing species that will take up to 10 years to achieve 15 feet in height. It can easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Prefers moist, organically rich soils. Promptly remove root suckers to control spread. There are many ways to eat and prepare Cornelian cherries. Acidic and sweet, the cherries can be eaten raw or dried, and are also commonly used in preserves and to make wine and liqueur. In Turkey, the fruits are used to flavour sherbet, as well as to make jams and marmalades. This adaptable plant is winter hardy to -25 to -30 degrees F.
