Carissa spinarum is a much-branched spiny, evergreen shrub or small tree, grows from 1 - 5.5 metres tall. Native to the drier parts of the tropics and subtropics from Africa, through Arabia, Asia to Australia and New Caledonia. It is an important resource for local people, the plant is gathered from the wild for use as food and medicine.It bearing soft and fleshy, rounded, dark purple fruits with a sweet and very pleasant flavour.They are normally eaten raw and made into jam also a vinegar can be made from them by fermentation.
