Manilkara kauki, commonly known as the khirni or rayan tree, is a tropical evergreen tree belonging to the family Sapotaceae (subfamily Sapotoideae, tribe Sapoteae), where it holds distinct botanical importance as the type species for the genus Manilkara. Native to a broad geographical range, it occurs naturally across tropical Asia—spanning from Indo-China through Malesia—and extends into northern Queensland, Australia. While it is rarely cultivated on a large-scale commercial level for agriculture, the tree is frequently favored as an ornamental plant in landscape design due to its dense, attractive foliage and hardiness.
The tree yields small, highly palatable fruits renowned for their distinctively rich and sugary flavor profile, which highlights sweet notes reminiscent of honey, brown sugar, and cooked pumpkin or date. Texture-wise, the fruit is firm yet remarkably fleshy, delivering a mouthfeel akin to a plum or a date alongside a subtle, pear-like crispness. Underneath its predominant sweetness, the fruit carries a gentle nuance of woody or earthy undertones, giving its overall taste a uniquely complex and pleasant character.
