Plant Type

Camellia japonica, commonly known as Japanese camellia, is an evergreen shrub native to Japan, Korea, and China. It's prized for its beautiful, large flowers that can be white, pink, red, or variegated. The blooms typically appear in late winter to early spring, adding color to gardens during a time when few other plants are in bloom.
Japanese camellias do best with a bit of morning sun and afternoon shade or dappled sun all day, while sasanqua camellias prefer full sun. Most camellias will survive the winter in zones 7 to 10 (plus there are some new varieties that will also survive in zone 6).

Here are the main care requirements for growing a Japanese camellia:

Select a location in partial shade where the shrub is sheltered from winter winds.
Make sure the soil is slightly acidic (do a soil test before planting).
Provide the plant with consistent moisture.
Fertilize with a high-potassium fertilizer during the summer months.
Mulch around the base in the fall to insulate the roots against the cold.
