Musa itinerans is a new and very rare, medium sized banana from mountainous tropical forests in the north of the island of Taiwan around 450 m. It differs from Musa itinerans var. formosana mainly in the longer inflorescence rachis and more compact fruit hands. In cultivation it is best suited to warm temperate and tropical climates in USDA Zones 10 and above. It is a highly unique and colorful banana having iridescent pink-purple-blue fruits. The fruits grow to 4-6" and form in nice clusters. They are used in Thai cooking and are often cooked.
