Botanical Name: Syzygium Cumini

Native to East Asia—China, India, and Malaysia.

Fruit Description:

Purple, olive-shaped fruits.

Slightly sweet, juicy, pleasant, slightly bitter, and astringent flesh.

Can be eaten raw or used to make jams, jellies, and juices.

Seeds are dried and ground up to make a coffee-like beverage.

Uses:

Both the seeds and the fruit are diuretic.

Possess important carminative and astringent properties.

Seeds can help reduce blood sugar levels and are beneficial in treating diabetes.

Good for heart health and blood pressure.

Excellent for oral health.

Planting and Care

S. cumini grows best in wet regions, though it will tolerate drier sites especially when established and on stony and/or gravelly soils. It is a tropical species preferring mean annual temperatures around 25–27°C, being sensitive to frost when young but mature trees remain undamaged. The tree grows well on higher land if well-drained such as marls, sands or oolitic limestone.

Special Feature

Loaded with vitamin C and iron, Jamun increases haemoglobin. Jamun or the black plum improves the number of haemoglobin, and the iron present in the fruit acts as a blood purifying agent.

Uses/Benefits

Apart from fruits other parts like leaves, bark, seed, flowers and roots are also rich sources of several bioactive compounds like antioxidants, flavonoids, phenolics, carotenoids and vitamins. Thus these can be used efficiently against hypoglycaemic, antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-HIV, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory properties.
