Plant Type

The Black Cambucá, scientifically known as Eugenia macrosperma, is a highly prized and attractive species within the $Eugenia$ genus, particularly among collectors of rare fruits. It is a native species of the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, where it naturally occurs in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, and Bahia. It belongs to the Racemosae section of Eugenia.

Tree Characteristics: The tree itself is typically small to medium-sized, a significant advantage for home gardeners and those with limited space. It develops a dense canopy, which not only provides excellent shade but also creates a beautiful, compact silhouette, making it ideal for home gardens and collectors of rare $Eugenia$ species.
Fruit Appearance: The fruits are one of its most striking features. They mature to a color ranging from dark purple to nearly black when ripe. The fruits are generally round to slightly flattened in shape and stand out highly attractively against the glossy green foliage of the tree.
Flavor and Culinary Use: The ripe fruits contain a rich, juicy pulp that offers a truly delightful gastronomic experience. The flavor is notably pleasant and sweet, often described as reminiscent of $Eugenia$ $involucrata$ (Cherry of the Rio Grande). Its balanced sweetness makes it exceptionally enjoyable for eating fresh right off the tree. Furthermore, the pulp is excellent for preparing juices and desserts.
