Banana Pineapple also known as Purple Karatas/Cocuixtles is a cousin of the pineapple, there are a few bromelia species native to Mexico commonly known as cocuixtles or piñuelas. The plants thrive under large trees and can handle brief frost. It grows for 2-3 years before making a massive 50 lb cluster of fruits that taste in-between sugarcane and pineapple.(The fruit is up to 8cm long) Most often used in making drinks called aqua dulce or eaten with chile and salt.
