General Information Platonia insignis is one of the rarest and tastiest fruit from the Amazonian region. It is the sole species of the genus Platonia, is a tree of the family Clusiaceae native to South America in the humid forests of Brazil, Paraguay, parts of Colombia and northeast to Guyana; especially in Amazon Rainforest. Common names include bacuri, maniballi, naranjillo and bacurizeiro.
It is one of the most popular fruits n the Amazonian region, it is often gathered from the wild and is sometimes sold in local markets. The tree is seldom cultivated, but when the local people clear land for planting or pastures, they always leave this tree standing for the sake of its edible fruits. The fruits are normally eaten raw or cooked to make sherbet, ice cream, marmalade or jelly. The fruit is yellow when ripe, nearly round or ovoid, 75 - 125mm wide, weighing up to 1 Kg, The white, pithy pulp has a pleasant odour and an agreeable, Sweet subacid flavour resembles a papaya, mango and Honey.
